Misfits are an American Punk Rock band often recognized as the progenitors of the Horror Punk subgenre, blending Punk Rock and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey the original lineup consisted of singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, guitarist Jimmy Battle, bassist Diane DiPiazza, and drummer Manny Martínez. Following the departure of DiPiazza, Danzig and bassist Jerry Only were the only consistent members throughout the next six years. During this time they released several EPs and singles, and with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s Hardcore Punk movement. Misfits disbanded in 1983 and Danzig went on to form Samhain and then the eponymous Danzig. Several albums of reissued and previously unreleased material were issued after the group's dissolution, and their music became influential to Punk Rock, Heavy Metal, and Alternative Rock music of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

After a series of legal battles with Danzig, Only and Doyle regained the rights to record and perform as the Misfits. They formed a new version of the band in 1995 with singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr. Chud. This incarnation of Misfits had a sound much more rooted in heavy metal, and released the albums American Psycho (1997) and Famous Monsters (1999) before dissolving in 2000. Jerry Only then took over lead vocals and recruited former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena and former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone for a Misfits 25th Anniversary tour. This lineup released an album of cover songs entitled Project 1950 and toured for several years. In 2005 Ramone was replaced by Robo, who had played with Black Flag in the early 1980s and had also previously been Misfits' drummer from 1982 to 1983. This lineup released a single titled "Land of the Dead" in 2009. The Misfits' lineup of Only, Cadena, and drummer Eric "Chupacabra" Arce released a new album titled The Devil's Rain in October 2011. In 2015 it was announced that Cadena would be taking a break from music after receiving a cancer diagnosis, and was replaced by Only's son Jerry Caiafa II. That same year Soulfly's Marc Rizzo joined the band, also playing guitar, filling in for Cadena before Caiafa would move on to become the sole guitarist for the band.

Cortex was a combo from Gothenburg and were active from 1980-1988. Front Figure and sole constant member was Freddie Wadling. He had a major role in the Gothenburg music scene and played in several bands, for example Perverts, Rukorna, Blue for Two (electro music), Lädernunnan (The Leathernun) and The Mobile Whorehouse. The band is today best known for the song 'The Freaks', who are featured in the film God Save the King. Cortex grew out from Freddie Wadling's former band Liket Lever and was called at first (from January 1980) Coma Jesus, but they quickly changed the name into Cortex. 1981 they released their first 7inch at Heartwork Records. The band was initially very punk-related but then more towards into a decent new wave sound. Today, however, the band counted as the most post-punk band. The band changed its constant members, and even their song material was wide. Cortex was initially on the label Heartwork Records, run by Henrik Venant in Lund during the first half of the 80s, but then switched to the Gothenburg-based Radium 226.05 label. Their legendary rare debut slab Spinal Injuries came out 1983 (recorded 1981) and offers ten cool punkish wave-rock-pop tunes, including the song 'The Freaks', their most famous creation. The band released a live album, plus two others, compilation songs (Abcess Exil m.fl.) and at the end of the 80s the band split up and has now cult status. Lovely piano, singalongs, fine guitars + great lyrics: A perfect Album!

Q. When did CHICKN begin? Tell us about the history...
CHICKN begun in a cold December's night. It all started as a joke, as it always starts but it instantly started to grow solid and massive. It made clear really fast that it will stay for a while.

Q: Who are your influences?
All of our influences co-exist in what we call our strange meeting-room. It's a room where our influences sit and discuss, Everything and anything can sit on a chair in this room
and please let's avoid the usual name dropping. What really matters is the conversation pieces and we never run out of this stuff.

Like burning from the inside.

Q. How do you describe CHICKN´s sounds?
We have a greek idiom about the sound we have adopted that roughly translates to "shaving sound". Other descriptive words would be "shiny", "trippy", and who could forget "three-fuzzes-in-a-row".

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
When we have a clear image about a song, it is time to bring it to life. The process is nothing more than sculpting. Performing and recording songs actually belong in the field
of sculpture. No doubt about that.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Oh, that has happened too much. We cover songs all the time both in rehearsals and gigs, so I do not have anything specific from the top of my head. Let's say I would love to cover Area's "Cometa Rossa". That would be nice.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We are planning our next two releases right now and an European tour for October 2018.

Q: Any parting words?

The first PROVOKE show I saw was one of the last with the lineup on this 2016 demo. They switched members with class, making their switches during the set so that the (then) new personnel finished the show. And the cooler than the fact that they remained shit hot fire during ever move was the camaraderie with which everything happened - like the "old" was just kinda passing the thing on and offering support. Like they were all still family. I'm not going to get into the male vocals on this demo vs. Jenny's vocals in the current lineup, because it really is still the same band and both singers are fukkn devastating so win/win. Fierce, urgent hardcore, not at all contrived, and a spirit that owes ever so slightly of early '00s political-meets-posi hardcore that flooded the scene (speaking of that era, Moses nails the new millennium fastcore drums better than anyone I've watched in ages). The aren't a new band anymore, but PROVOKE are at the center of a new crew of hardcore in the Bay Area that is getting me (re)stoked.

We're still recovering from Sled Island, and have been slower than normal in getting to the tapes we picked up during the festival. Why? We're old. We can admit it. We started this project when we weren't quite so old, and with every Sled we feel the additional year.

Anyways, we're tickled pink that the Shiverettes have re-released their full-length album from last year on tape. This was one of our absolute favourites from last year - we still think "Dead Men Can't Cat Call" and "Missing Stair" would be an absolute killer 7" single. Anyways, we've said a lot about the Shiverettes in previous posts (immensely relevant, killer guitar sound, amazing contrast between Hayley and Kaely's voices, etc etc) - so how about we just dream about seeing them on our favourite patio:

This is a record I must listen twice before it gets me. Released on EMI, the Monks were an English punk band formed in the late 1970s, by former members of Strawbs - Richard Hudson, John Ford and Brian Willoughby, along with Terry Cassidy (vocals and synthesisers) and Clive Pierce (drums). The album spawned a number 19 hit single in the UK Singles Chart "Nice Legs Shame About Her Face". The song was originally a demo not intended for release and Ford later commented in Mojo magazine, that "it was a bit of a problem when it was a hit." They dabbled with 1930s style music in 1980 as 'High Society', before in 1981 returning to the pseudo-punk format of The Monks for a follow-up album released in Canada only called Suspended Animation. While the album failed to produce further UK chart success, the band were huge in Canada particularly and playing stadium gigs. 1982 the Monks were history. The singer sometimes reminds me of Jefferson Turner/Cockney Rejects and the instrumental at the end is almost a beautiful piece of surf.

Madball is a New York-based band that originated in 1988 as a side-project of Agnostic Front. 

Agnostic Front's frontman Roger Miret would let his younger brother, Freddy "Madball" Cricien take the microphone on lead vocals during Agnostic Front shows and that is where it started. 

Madball's first few gigs consisted of un-used Agnostic Front songs.
