I have a complicated relationship with Screeching Weasel. As a band, they have mastered the art of the simple. They understand that simple lyrics, simple chord progressions, and simple time signatures can be used to create a brand of punk rock with a complexity all its own. And they are good at it! Say what you want about Ben Weasel (and I have of not-so-flattering thins to say), but he understood how to write a good song. At times, his lyrics are even a little clever. I still smirk a bit when I hear the line "we don't need 12 steps to show us how weak we've become anymore" (A New Tomorrow), even though I know that it reflects a kind of arrogance (I have a problem with AA too, but it doesn't make you weak if you need it!) that made him a source of derision. Yet, the simplicity that gives these songs their value contains the seed of its weakness. The simple is reductionist. Bratmobile was absolutely right when they accused Ben Weasel of sexism by way of caricature. That's what they do. The simple extracts meaning from things that have been stripped of complexity. Caricatures are all that remain. I try to remember that when I listen to these songs. It somehow makes it okay to smirk when I know I shouldn't.
